Patients (and attending nephrologists) have the option to use a dialyzer one time or multiple times. For multiple use (reuse dialyzer), a consent shall be secured upon admission to the branch.
Single Use Dialyzer – use of new dialyzer (low flux or high flux) at every dialysis session. Dialyzer is discarded after each session.
Reuse Dialyzer – use of the same dialyzer by the same patient for multiple times (current policy is up to eight (8) times). Dialyzers for reuse are reprocessed, cleaned and disinfected and must pass the pressure leak test and residual blood volume for it to be reused multiple times.
Hemoperfusion
Hemoperfusion is a type of blood purification process that involves the passage of anticoagulated whole blood through a device called hemoperfusion cartridge that contains adsorbent particles. This procedure is used for the removal of toxins in poisoning and cytokines from septic and inflamed patients. A specific hemoperfusion cartridge designed for patients on maintenance hemodialysis is used to address hemodialysis-related complications such as pruritus, sleep disorders and peripheral neuropathy.
